Under the earth’s crust lies many large plates, beneath Kobe there was a plate margin (Where to plates meet), these two plates collided and one went underneath the other this caused major earthquake due to the sudden movement of the plates colliding together, this is called compressional plate movement (As they were moving towards eachother)
